Maersk Teturns to The Skies with Air Freight Service

Danish shipping giant Maersk has announced that it will return to the skies with Maersk Air Cargo via air freight services. The shipping giant revealed that Maersk Air Cargo will be based at Billund Airport and begin operations later this year.

Operations will end at Billund Airport and are expected to start in the second half of 2022.

Aymeric Chandavoine, Head of Global Logistics and Services at Maersk, said: “Air freight services is a key enabler of global supply chain flexibility and agility as it enables our customers to meet time-critical supply chain challenges and provide modal choice for high-value shipments quantity.” .

“We strongly believe in working closely with our customers. Therefore, it is key for Maersk to increase our presence in the global air cargo industry by introducing air cargo to better meet the needs of our customers.”

Maersk said it will have daily flights from Denmark’s second-largest airport under an agreement with the Pilots Union (FPU), and this is not its first rodeo.

Initially, the company will employ five aircraft — two new B777Fs and three leased B767-300 freighters — with the goal of its new air cargo wing being able to handle about a third of its annual cargo volume.

The company is no stranger to the aviation industry, operating Maersk Airways from 1969 to 2005.
