GUANGZHOU, China – Focus Global Logistics Corporation (FGL) Guangzhou branch has successfully executed a challenging shipment of a chain grate stoker from Nansha, China, to Jakarta, Indonesia, demonstrating its expertise in specialised project cargo handling under tight deadlines.
The consignment comprised one main body of the chain grate stoker with extreme dimensions of 11,080 mm (L) × 5,800 mm (W) × 2,890 mm (H) and a weight of 45 tonnes, together with other components packed in standard containers. All units were cleared through customs under a single declaration. The cargo was loaded onto a BBK 5×40FR vessel (flat-rack containers) on the direct sailing route from Nansha to Jakarta, with a transit time of 6–7 days.
Critical Timeline & Operational Efficiency
The shipment required extraordinary speed and precision. Vessel space was only approved on the evening of 31 July, leaving just days to complete cargo pickup on 1–2 August, prepare all necessary slings and lifting gears, and meet the 3 August cut-off for the vessel’s 6 August sailing. Early on 6 August, the cargo was successfully loaded aboard, marking another milestone in FGL’s project logistics capabilities.
Key Challenges Overcome
1. Dimension Discrepancy: The initial dimensions provided by the client deviated from the actual measured size, requiring repeated adjustments to the stowage plan and close coordination with the shipping line.
2. Vessel-Type Conflict: Originally planned for a bulk carrier, the shipment had to be switched to a containerised solution using 5×40ft flat-rack containers because certain parts required standard container packing – increasing operational complexity.
3. Lifting Gear Shortage: Neither the carrier nor the terminal provided slings or spreaders; all lifting equipment had to be sourced and prepared by FGL.
4. Heavy-Lift Complexity: The oversized, heavy main body demanded careful calculation of lifting points and centre of gravity, with multiple rounds of confirmation with the client to ensure safe handling.
5. Port Coordination: At the origin port, FGL had to integrate data on terminal crane capacity, yard space and barge connections. At destination, special attention was paid to unloading feasibility, including equipment availability and site preparation, verified through multiple rounds of assessment with local agents and terminal operators.
6. Flat-Rack Equipment Availability: Securing the rare flat-rack containers and optimising their placement on board required intensive negotiation with the shipping line and simulation of stowage balance.

• Tailored Special-Container Stowage Plan: FGL designed a dedicated flat-rack / open-top container loading scheme that accommodated all components on the same vessel, seamlessly bridging the gap between bulk and container shipping.

• Comprehensive Port Capability Pre-Assessment:
• Origin: Multiple contingency plans were developed based on quay crane load limits, yard space, and feeder connections.
• Destination: Proactive evaluation of floating/land crane specifications, road widths and customs clearance procedures was carried out, with two or more rounds of verification with the local agent and terminal operators. Site cleaning and equipment reservations were made prior to vessel arrival.
• Special-Equipment Resource Pool & Collaborative Stowage Platform: Leveraging strong partnerships with multiple carriers, FGL secured priority access to flat-rack containers and vessel slots. The commercial, operations, and carrier teams jointly simulated the placement sequence and weight distribution of all flat-racks to produce an optimised stowage plan, minimising on-site adjustments.
Destination Unloading Preparedness
To ensure a smooth discharge in Jakarta, FGL coordinated in advance for trucks to be positioned at the berth ready for direct ship-side unloading immediately upon the vessel’s arrival.
